William Irvine was the acting President of Wheelock College during the 1972-1973 academic year, and the eighth President of the College. Irvine was a native of Framingham, Massachusetts. He received an A.B. in Business Administration from the University of Maine in 1942, and following wartime service in the U.S. Army, was awarded a M.Ed. from the University of Maine in 1947 and a Ph.D. in Education Administration from Cornell University in 1952. Irvine worked as the Principal of Isleboro High School in Maine from 1947-1950 and went on to serve in a variety of school administrative positions in New York and Connecticut. Prior to his appointment at Wheelock, Irvine’s career included positions as Dean of the University of Maine, inter-college coordinator at Cornell University, and professor of education and later, president, at the University of Vermont. He was the first Regional Education Officer for Africa for the U.S. Department of State in 1964-1966. His professional activities included membership in the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools , and a term as president of the National Council of Independent Junior Colleges from 1971-1972.
