Henry H. Callard was the acting President of Wheelock College during the 1965-1966 academic year, and the College’s fifth President. Callard received an A.B. from Johns Hopkins in 1925, an A.M. from Trinity College in 1929 and an Ed.M from Harvard University in 1938, as well as honorary degrees from Harvard and Princeton. Callard came to Wheelock with extensive experience, having held teaching and administrative posts at the Gilman School in Baltimore, MD, the Avon Old Farms School and the Tower Hill School, both in Connecticut, and the Millbrook School in New York. Immediately prior to his appointment at Wheelock, Callard served as an advisor to American schools overseas for the State Department. His association with Wheelock continued long after his term as President ended in 1966. In 1970, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science in Education from Wheelock, and in 1972 was chosen as interim dean of academic affairs by President William L. Irvine. Callard died in 1986.
