The collection is organized into two series with the second series being organized into three sub-series.
Series I: Biographical, 1940-1986
Contains newspaper clippings, remembrances published in 1965 in Childhood Education and ACEI Branch Exchange, and a short biographical sketch. Includes the Board of Trustees announcement of Bain’s appointment to President and of a scholarship fund in her honor. Also contains a finding aid for the Winifred E. Bain Collection at the ACEI Archives.
Series II: Professional Work, 1932-1965
Documents Bain’s professional work. Contains information about Bain's work within the educational community, Bain’s writings on education, and administrative records of the Office of the President at Wheelock College. The series is divided into three sub-series:
Subseries 1: Professional Affiliations and Activities, 1932-1964
Documents the professional affiliations and activities of Winifred Bain. Newspaper clippings, project reports, correspondence, and programs of events can all be found. Bain’s efforts for legislation in support of kindergartens make up the bulk of these materials. Includes several pamphlets published by the ACEI, the U.S. Department of Education, and others, as well as correspondence with legislators in New York and with the Director of Kindergartens in Hawaii. A transcript of Bain’s 1940 New York radio broadcast on “State Aid for Kindergartens” is also included.
Subseries 2: Writings and Lectures, 1924-1965
Contains Bain’s published writings and typescript lectures on early childhood education. Check the Wheelock College Library Catalog at http://www.wheelock.edu/library for other writings by Bain.
Subseries 3: Wheelock College Administrative, 1942-1955
Documents some Bain’s work at Wheelock College. Consists mainly of Annual Reports of the President, 1952-1955, and a very small selection of correspondence, including a proposal for Wheelock’s publicity program in 1943.
