Administrative/Biographical History
Gerald N. Tirozzi became the eleventh President of Wheelock College in 1991. Previously, Tirozzi served as the State Commissioner of Education in Connecticut and as Superintendent of Schools in New Haven, Connecticut. He graduated from Southern Connecticut State University and was awarded a certificate of advanced study by Fairfield University and a Ph.D. by Michigan State University. During his tenure at Wheelock, faculty salaries increased, and Wheelock formed a Committee on Race and Racism to further campus commitment to multiculturalism. Notably, Tirozzi reallocated funds earmarked for his inauguration to create three scholarships for students. Tirozzi left Wheelock in 1993 to spend more time working on public policy issues relating to urban education.
