Documents Cheever’s professional work at Wheelock College. Contains selections from Cheever's writings about education and management and records created in his role as President of Wheelock College. The series is divided into two sub-series:
Subseries 1: Writings and Lectures, 1982-1990
Contains Cheever’s writings and lectures on education and management. Includes a copy of speech given by Cheever to the National Association for the Education of Young Children in 1988. Check the Wheelock College Library Catalog at http://www.wheelock.edu/library for other writings by Cheever.
Subseries 2: Wheelock College Administrative, 1982-1991
Documents some of Cheever’s work at Wheelock College. Contains information relating to Cheever's selection as President, the enrollment and finances study of 1983, and two reports from the President from 1983 and 1988. Also contains one folder of memoranda composed by Cheever, including his resignation letter.
Administrative/Biographical History
Daniel S. Cheever was the tenth President of Wheelock College. Cheever received a B.A., a Master of Arts in Teaching, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. Prior to his position at Wheelock, Cheever served as the Superintendent of Schools in Lincoln, MA, and in Weston, MA. He was the director of project development at the Education Development Center in Newton, and worked as an administrator and teacher for public school systems in Philadelphia, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. He succeeded President Marshall at Wheelock in 1983, after having served on Wheelock’s Board of Trustees since 1976. Cheever left Wheelock College in 1991. During his tenure, Wheelock’s endowment rose from $1.5 million to $7.5 million, undergraduate enrollment increased 60%, and postgraduate enrollment doubled.
